Keep Your Food Safe From Deadly Pesticides and Herbicides By Growing Hydroponic Vegetables At Home

Hydroponics is a great, fun and clean way to grow plants indoors by supplying water, nutrients, and oxygen to their roots. Hydroponic growing is perfect for fruit bearing crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, lettuce and herbs. By synthetically controlling every aspect of the garden, almost any kind of plant imaginable can be grown using hydroponics! The majority of hydroponic gardeners plant crops similar to what they would grow in a soil garden. If it can be grown in a pot with soil it can also be grown by using hydroponics with a soilless medium. In your indoor Hydroponic garden you must be the sole creator of all aspects of the plants environment

A plant doesnt require soil to grow. There is no soil in a hydroponics garden, so the plants need to be anchored some how. There are many items which can be used to support plants, these are called soilless mediums. Clay pebbles and Rockwool are the most popular medium. These soilless mediums work best because they are pH neutral and provide plenty of support for plants. They retain moisture, and allow for good air circulation.

pH is one of the most disregarded aspects of gardening, pH is very important in hydroponics gardening. pH is measured on a scale of 1-14 with 7 being “neutral”. Anything lower than 7 is acidic and anything above 7 is alkaline (bases). All plants require a certain pH level in order to produce optimum results. The pH level will vary from plant to plant, but in general the majority prefer a slightly acidic level (between 6.0 – 6.5), though most plants can still tolerate an environment with a pH of between 5.0 and 7.5. The preferred method of checking and adjusting pH levels is to use a pH meter. pH adjustments can be made by simply adding a small amount of pH up or pH down solution to your reservoir.

Starting your garden out by planting seeds can be one of the most enjoyable parts of gardening. Seedlings dont require as an intense amount of light as does a more mature plant. You will want to use a florescent light about 2 above the top of your seedlings. Too much intense light and heat will burn them up and kill them. You will need a propagation tray and humidity dome. Use these to keep your medium and seeds in the perfect environment.

The preferred method for growing vegetables, flowers and herbs year round is with HID lighting, it stands for High Intensity Discharge Lighting, which is a special type of lighting that is much more intense than any other grow lights. Decide what size of light to use. First you need to figure out the square footage of your indoor garden. To do this you will need to measure the space. This is how to find the square footage of your grow space. (Width x Length= Square Feet) Example: if you want your indoor garden to be in your closet which is 3×4, you will find this room to be 12sq.ft. (You will also want the height of your room to be at least 4 above the canopy of your plants.) For most grow operations an 8-10 foot ceiling will work fine. This will allow you to keep your lamp at least a minimum of 18 above the top of your plants. (HID lights get hot and can burn the tops of your plants.) Next you will need to know how many watts/square foot of light your plants will require. For Example, tomatoes need to attain around 40-50 watts per square foot for optimal growth. You then would take 50 watts x 12sq. ft. = 600 watts. This means that you will need a 600watt light to maintain your plants optimal growth in this particular garden. (Plants wattage needs x Square Feet = HID light requirement.)

Using Surveys In The Workplace

It doesn’t matter if you have hundred of thousands of employees, or just three, employee surveys are still necessary to ensure a smooth running organization. However, conducting surveys is more than just handing out forms and getting your employees to answer. To ensure the accuracy of survey data, you, as an employer must observe proper guidelines.

First, be clear about the goals of the employee surveys. Are the surveys to be utilized as gauges for salary increase or for amendments of company policies? It is also important to explain these objectives to the employees. It is advisable to discuss with them the rationale behind the need for a survey and why is it necessary. Another important aspect to discuss is how they will be informed of survey results. These people would want to see results. Second, contact an impartial third-party organization to facilitate and conduct the survey. This will assure employees that their answers and results will not be tampered with to the advantage of the management. Third, be clear about the time constraints. Conduct the survey within a specific time frame so that the process would be more efficient and the results would be achieved as quickly as possible. Fourth, emphasize the value of survey response. Aim for a hundred percent response rate to ensure that all employees have had their say. This will pave the way for a democratic compromise between you as the employer, and the employees. Let your employees in on discussions about these matters and you can be almost be assured of optimum survey results.

However, employee surveys are much more effective if there is a guarantee from the management. Guarantee your employees that your actions and the changes in the company will be based on the survey results. Inform them how you intend to act on these results. It is a good idea to suggest that the final move regarding the survey results would be based upon employer-employee compromise. Provide the means to conduct the survey. It is important that the means you choose should be based on the skills of your employees. An online survey program can process data faster but if most of your employees don’t know how to use computers or aren’t comfortable using one, a paper questionnaire survey is your best bet. In any survey, it is important to assure your subjects that their anonymity will be protected. Confidentiality of personal information is important to encourage employees to be honest in answering surveys.

Lastly, remind your employees that the employee surveys are done for the protection of their rights within the company. It is a good idea to remind them during the course of data collection about survey goals. Publish survey results to encourage your employees to participate in discussions of company plans.

Top 5 Ways To Destroy Your Engagement Ring And How To Avoid Them!

What better way to say “I Hate This Ring” than to either destroy or lose it! We have compiled a list of the most dubious and common methods of ensuring a lost or damaged ring.
This guide can be used two ways; first for those who are actually out to destroy or lose their ring, and secondly for those who want to take a few extra steps to ensure the safety and security of their most prized possession.

#5. Lack of Security:

The Plot:
If destroying your Engagement Ring is what you want to do, look no further than this tactic. The easiest way to ensure a lost or damaged Engagement Ring is a lack of a solid security system. Leaving Rings out in the open and not having a secure place to store them guarantee their destruction and/or disappearance.
*Disclaimer: This tactic is for the lazy ONLY

Previous Case:
This situation is so common its occurances are not often recorded, but rest assured, this happens every day. Rings are left out “only for a minute” and forgotten, or set on a counter only to “disappear” moments later, never to be seen again.

How To Avoid It:
Luckily, this problem is as easy to avoid as it is to create. Place your ring in the same, safe place every day to avoid accidentally misplacing it. There are many different ways to store your jewelry safely, from lockable jewelry boxes to a high security safe. There is nothing like always knowing exactly where your rings are.

#4. In The Ocean:

The Plot:
This scheme never fails. Wearing your Engagement Ring into any large body of water opens the opportunity to lose it, especially in the ocean. It is a well known trick to run your finger under cold water in order to remove a stuck ring. In order to compensate for the quick drop in body temperature, blood is transferred to your core from places like your fingers, causing them to shrink. Ever heard of shrinkage?

Previous Case:
These stories are eveywhere. People who go for a swim in a pool, a lake, or an ocean only to find their Engagement Ring missing. Most are never found.

How To Avoid It:
Don’t wear your Engagement Ring when you swim! If you plan on swimming, find a safe and secure place to store your ring (not on the armrest of your beach chair!).Bonus: Combine the cold water with some oily sun screen and you have yourself a surefire way to destroy that Engagement Ring!

#3. Gardening:

The Plot:
Gardening is one of the sneakiest ways to destroy that Engagement Ring you love so much. You are moving around a lot, sweaty, digging in dirt; what better time to accidentally drop that ring off your finger, or set it down in the flower bed and forget about it?
Bonus: Don’t forget about the effectiveness of the abbrasive earth! Metal is not as invulnerable as you may think. Rocks and dirt will guarantee results; a scratched up and possibly broken ring!

Previous Case:
One woman got very lucky. She found her ring 20 years after she had lost it in her mothers garden (even though it was probably still badly damaged).

How To Avoid It:
Like most of the examples on this list, the simple answer is to just not wear your Engagement Ring while you are gardening. Place your ring in a safe location before you begin that weeding!

#2. Pumping Iron:

The Plot:
This is a double whammy. The gym is one of those “no-go zones” for Engagement Rings. From slamming and banging your ring against heavy weights to people breaking into lockers, there is nowhere for a ring to hide in a gym. If you want to guarantee a lost ring, bring it here!

Previous Case:
There was one such news story about a woman who says she “never wore her rings to the gym.” However, one day she was running late to work and felt that she could just leave her wedding rings in her locker at the gym. Sure enough, her rings, valued at $16,000 were gone in no time.

How To Avoid It:
If you haven’t gotten the point yet, just don’t bring it to the gym in the first place! It is much easier to safely store your Engagement Ring in a safe location at your home than it is to deal with the loss of one.

#1. Lack of Care:

The Plot:
What makes this scheme rank #1 on our list? This method is notorious for how quickly it will sneak up on an unsuspecting victim. Rings, like all things, get old and begin to wear. Dirt, Grime, Oils, and general daily use contributes to the gradual decline of the state of your jewelry. How fast they wear down and any permanent damage, however, is completely up to the owner and is determined by how much care is given to the ring. Regular cleanings and inspections alone will drastically reduce the chance of any real damage occurring.

How To Avoid It:
Your Engagement Ring is your most precious possession, it is important that you take care of it as such. It is a common misconception is that taking care of your rings tedious, time consuming, or expensive.

Cultural Differences Reflected In Meditation Practices

The Western Way of Meditation

By Western way, I mostly refer to the modern American way of meditation.

The American way of meditation is accompanied by spiritual music and/or verbal guidance. And the meditator can sit in a comfortable chair or even lay down.

The American meditation guide instructs you to pay attention to your breathing during meditation.

In the act of physical silence and non-movement, there is actual movement within the meditation. For instance, the meditator is guided from one spot to another, such as following a quiet wooded path to the side of a tranquil lake, or from a green pasture to a beach with peaceful waves.

The American meditation encourages you to feel the physical sensation of each part of your body at the beginning of the meditation, and tries to evoke in you the feeling or sensation during the meditation, such as feeling the warmth of the sun on your skin or the sand on your feet on the beach.

It also encourages you to seek your spiritual teachers and answers from your meditation.

What Is Different About Eastern Way of Meditation

By Eastern way of meditation, I mean Indian way, since most of Eastern spiritualism originates from India.

There is no music to accompany the meditation. The meditator will sit on the floor or very low chair with legs crossed close to the body, referred to as the “Lotus” position.

The Eastern meditation may be preceded by some yoga stretches, and a brief moment of breathing in and out of right and left nostril alternately.

The sacred mantra that each meditator is given should be used sparingly to keep the mind from connecting thoughts.

The meditator is to shut off all physical senses: no desire to hear, see, smell, feel or touch anything. “I desire nothing. I seek nothing. I am nothing”.

Therefore, do not seek your spiritual teacher, and do not seek answers to any questions you have, and do not desire wisdom from anywhere.

How Meditation Practices Reflect Cultural Differences

The western culture stresses on individuality while the eastern culture stresses on uniformity. The Western way of meditation encourages you to connect with your Source and become conscious of who you really ARE; the eastern way of meditation keeps you disconnected from everything.

While the individualistic western meditator finds connection and unity in his meditation, the eastern meditator finds moments of isolation and singularity.

The western meditation wants you to feel, explore and imagine, whereas the eastern meditation wants you to shut off all senses, be still and completely empty the mind.

The western meditation as western culture values variety, growth and expansion. The eastern meditation as eastern culture values uniformity, stillness and status quo.

The western culture believes in dreams and desires, and success in life; the eastern culture believes that “too much desire for senses creates lusts and too much desire for material creates greed”.

Ultimately, the western culture treats each person as mature adult, able to decide what to do with their lives or their resources. One can do good things when he is successful. He is just more of himself when he has money.

The eastern culture treats each person as incapable of making decisions for their lives and their resources. One become corrupted when he has money. Wanting money is not good. So it’s better they stay the way they are. Don’t be successful. Don’t be rich. Don’t enjoy life too much. Just don’t do anything.

In a western culture such as the American culture, more people are typically ADD, even I, not ADD in nature, have become accustomed to ADD ways of behaviors. Maybe that’s why American s do better with guided meditations. The easterners can completely empty their mind and meditate for hours for pure spiritual pursuit.

The eastern culture I believe was shaped by the rulers. It surely is easier to rule a populous land if everyone is uniform and content. It is easier to rule a land if the people have no desires, no preferences, and no want of anything other than what they have been given.

Respect Each Culture and Take Only What Is Good for You

As someone who has lived in both eastern and western cultures, I respect each culture. Each culture is developed because it is appropriate and is necessary for survival.

As important as respecting each diverse culture, we are to take and apply only good things from each culture for our own benefit.

The universe is colorful and diverse, and is big enough to encompass all. Every faith, every religion and every culture has its own purpose in existence. They are appropriate for some people at some specific time or in specific situations.

Our job is to seek out what is appropriate for ourselves to live a fulfilled life.

It’s always a tough job of figuring out what to give to someone you love who will celebrate his or her birthday. The gifts that you will give to a person on his or her 75th birthday should be extremely special. You could present the celebrant with greetings recorded by family and friends

Exert a little extra effort and visit the celebrant’s family, relatives and friends. Record audio or video greetings they have for the celebrant and save it to a disk. It will surely be a surprise to the birthday celebrant if you can play the music which he used to love or sing while he was younger. Gift baskets make a wonderful and fun birthday gift no matter what the age of the recipient. One gift could contain lots of exciting stuff. Look for things that are also 75 years old that the celebrant will remember from their youth.

Make a collage or scrapbook

Generally, as people age, they tend to get more sentimental. Make a collage of pictures or a scrapbook to touch someone’s heart. Do not forget to include pictures taken during the different milestones of the celebrant’s life. Look for memorable moments in the person’s life such as pictures from a baptism, school days, graduation, first job, wedding, first family picture and other moments. Include photos of the celebrant’s favorite stars sports team, movies, and even favorite food if you decide to make a scrapbook. You could touch the heart of the celebrant by posting lines from his or her favorite song, poem, quotations in the scrapbook. In order to make the surprise even more sentimental, you should have visits from grandchildren, children, in-laws, and any other close friends who are available.

A gift that is bound to delight someone who is celebrating his or her 75th birthday would be to give him or her something that relates to his or her hobby or interest. Adding to a collection or finding items that bring back fond memories of the past are both wonderful git ideas. Coins, stamps, and other collectibles, which are meaningful to the celebrant, might also be considerations. If the birthday celebrant like to cook the dinner, let him do it and give him an apron and book containing recipes. If the celebrant loves gardening, you can give a new set of tools in a favorite color to make the gift more interesting.

Give the celebrant a pleasant shock with a ticket for a couple to an exquisite holiday resort

If you can afford it, surprise the honoree with an amazing gift of two plane tickets for two to an extraordinary vacation spot. Take into consideration the recipients age and whether or not they are able to travel. In order to make your gift everlasting memorable, opt for a spot for the birthday celebrations which is almost near to the residence of the celebrant and the celebrant would really love that idea.

Remember memories fondly by encasing a portrait in a frame, painting, or by writing poetry about the event

You must maintain emotional relationship with your gift and get a portrait, painting or a poem framed keeping that consideration in mind. If you want to frame items make sure to include one of the celebrant’s favorite. The children can be asked about their favorite photos or recite a poem or scene if you are a friend or relative. Choose a platinum-coated frame to go with the platinum birthday theme or a vintage-inspired frame that older people often love.

To finalize your gift to a person’s 75th birthday, make sure to creatively wrap it and with a heartfelt dedication inserted to make the gift complete. A gift from the heart is always most appreciated and remembered, as it illustrates the giver’s thoughtfulness.

Fair Use – An Exception to Copyright

The term -Fair Use’ in the context of copyright law refers to the use of material subject to copyright protection without permission or authorization from the copyright owner, in a way that would not infringe the copyright of the owner. The rationale behind the provision of the -Fair Use’ concept is to allow the general public to reap the benefits of the literary or artistic work in a way that would not be prejudicial to the moral and financial rights of the author. It allows the public to analyze, comment and criticize the works and helps in creating and sustaining a healthy environment for the growth of art and literature in the society.

The Berne Convention through its Article 10 permits the making of quotations from a work with appropriate details as to the source from where the quotation is taken and the author of the said quotation provided that the following conditions are met:

1.The work should have been made lawfully available to the public. This rule clarifies that only the work that is published (made available to the public through any of the modes of communication) lawfully can be subject to fair use. The word -lawfully’ included in the above rule stresses on the fact that fair use shall not rise from unauthorized publications.

2.The making of the quotations must be compatible with the fair practice. Every country has the right to provide the limitation regulation for the extent and purpose of the fair use of a work that is permissible. The use of a work should be compatible to the said regulations.

3.The extent of the quotations must not exceed the extent that is justified by purpose. There may be various reasons that justify fair use such as critic, comment, parody, education etc., and thus for each the extent of use varies. A parody may require much more use than a critic, and therefore it is essential to limit the use only to the extent of requirement.

The UAE provides for -Fair Use’ through its articles 22, 23 and 24 of the Federal law no. 7 of 2002 regarding Copyrights and Related Rights (herein after referred to as -the law’).

Article 22 of the law provides for the use of the copyrighted work in the following ways and circumstances provided that two conditions namely 1) the moral rights of the author are not being prejudiced and 2) the work has been lawfully published, must be satisfied:

1.The reproduction of a single copy of the work for the purpose of personal, non-profit and non-professional use. Works of fine or applied arts are an exception to this rule and they are subject to fair use only when they are exposed in a public place with the consent of the right owner or his successor. Architectural works are also an exception to the concept of Fair Use and would be subject to Fair Use only when they permanently exist in public places.

2.The Fair Use of computer programs, applications or databases is allowed only for making a single copy with the knowledge of the legitimate possessor for the following purposes:

a)For a purpose that falls within the licensed purpose.

b)For the purpose of saving or substitution in case the original copy is lost, damaged or becomes unfit for use, on a condition that the spare of extracted copy be destroyed when no more necessary.

3.Reproduction of protected works for use in judicial proceedings, or their equivalent, within the limits prescribed by such procedures, with mention of the source and the name of the author.

4.Making a single copy of the work through the non-profit archives, libraries or authentication offices, either directly or indirectly, in one of the two following instances:

a)Reproduction is made for the purpose of preserving the original copy or of substituting a lost, damaged copy or one unfit for use, if it has become impossible to obtain a substitute thereof under reasonable conditions.

b)The purpose of reproduction is the satisfaction of a request made by a physical person, to use it in a study or research provided it is done only once and on different intervals in case it was impossible to obtain a license for reproduction pursuant to the provisions of the present Law.

5.For citations of short paragraphs, excerpts, or analyses, within the customary limits of the work, for the purpose of criticism, discussion or information, with mention of the source and name of the author.

6.Performance of a work in meetings with family members or by pupils in an educational institution, so long as such performance has not been made for direct or indirect consideration.

7.Exhibition of works of fine, applied, plastic or architectural arts in broadcasts, if such works permanently exist in public places.

8.Reproduction within justified and reasonable limits, of short abstracts of a work in the form of manuscripts or audio, visual, or audiovisual recordings, for the purposes of cultural or religious education, or vocational training. The name of the author and the title of the work are to be mentioned whenever possible. The reproduction should not be made for the purpose of direct or indirect profits. Such reproduction is allowed only in case the license for the same cannot be availed.

Further, article 23 of the law brings under the scope of -Fair Use’ the reproduction of the work in such a way and limit that it justifies the objective behind the reproduction which is done through newspapers, periodicals or broadcasting organizations. This provision of the law applies to the following works:

1.Extracts of the works regarding current incidents that have been lawfully made available to the public. The source and author of the work must be mentioned.

2.Published articles relating to discussions of issues, which have preoccupied public opinion at a certain time. Here too, the source and name of the author of the article used must be mentioned. The articles that are prohibited upon publication cannot be used.

3.Speeches, lectures, and addresses delivered in the course of public sessions of the Parliament, judicial councils and public meetings; so long as such speeches, lectures and addresses are addressed to the public, and are reproduced within the framework of reporting current news.

This also provides that -Fair Use’ is allowed while using works that are protected under the title of -related rights’ of copyright. Thus even the owners of such related rights cannot complain of infringement if the use of the work falls within the scope of -Fair Use’ as provided for by the law.

Did You Know — 10 Bonsai Facts

Did you know…

1 – That the origin of Bonsai, while often attributed to the Japanese, is actually Chinese in derivation? Many experts agree that bonsai, know as Pensai in China, was practiced by scholars, monks and the noble classes of China as far back as 600 A.D.

2 – That the word “Bonsai”, which is pronounced “Bone- Sigh”, is made up of the two Japanese characters: “Bon” meaning tray and “sai” meaning plant, which when literally translated means: tray plant? Of course, the cultivation of bonsai trees has advanced much since its humble start as plants in trays.

3 – That an earthquake is responsible for shifting the “epicenter” of bonsai cultivation in Japan? In 1923 an 8.3 magnitude earthquake devastated the entire Kanto region of Japan. Destroying vast portions of the two largest cities: Tokyo and Yokohama; along with a majority of the commercial bonsai businesses. As a result, the bonsai business community, in an effort to save their livelihoods, collectively purchased a tract of land outside of Tokyo, in the Omiya region, where their businesses once again flourished.

4 – That in 1976 the people of Japan, in honor of the USA Bicentennial Celebration, presented to America 53 priceless bonsai trees and 6 remarkable viewing stones? These gifts were to become the foundation of our national collection.

5 – That the bark of a tree has three very important and practical functions? It is waterproof, so it prevents leaking from the phloem; It also houses small structures, called lenticels, that allow the tree to breathe; and the bark’s third function is to protect the phloem from all kinds of impacts, abrasions and attacks from pests; including: insects and fungi.

6 – That wounds on bonsai trees do not heal in the same manner as the wounds of humans and/or animals? That is to say, trees are not able to repair damaged tissue; instead they continue to manufacture a new layer of cells with each years growth, until the wounds is entirely covered over.

7 – That if you look at a cross-section of a tree trunk you will see rings and each of these rings indicates a full years worth of life and growth? Scientists can tell by the thickness or thinness of a ring in which year more rain and more subsequent growth took place.

8 – That mature trees, both bonsai and those on the front lawn, develop what is known as a ‘collar’ around the base of the largest branches? This swelling takes years to develop and is caused by the up and down, forward and backward, motion of the largest and heaviest branches as they are pushed to and fro by the whims of Mother Nature.

9 – That autumn is the most favorable season of the year to prune a majority of deciduous bonsai? There are at least two good reason for this: first, the fact that all of the leaves have dropped off of your bonsai is a good sign that it has entered dormancy and, therefore, will not ‘bleed’ or lose sap when it is pruned (although it is still advisable to apply ‘cut-paste’ or ‘wound sealant’ to all sizable cuts); and second, now that the bonsai is bare you can see and reach undesirable and/or dead branches that had been covered and made unnoticeable and/or inaccessible by the trees seasonal foliage.

10 – That bonsai trees, as well as, other trees and plants, are capable of absorbing synthetic nutrients through their foliage – oftentimes more readily then through their roots? When foliar feeding, be sure to carefully follow all of the manufacturers’ instructions and never foliar feed in direct sunlight, as leaves can burn quickly.
