Landscaping materials to use

In landscape design and architecture, hard landscaping materials refer to construction materials that a designer or architect uses to enhance the landscape design. Some examples of hard landscaping materials include stones, bricks, gravel, concrete, glass, and the like. The matching term soft landscaping materials refers to the plants.

Here are some common hard landscaping materials to get you familiar with these important elements in your landscape design:

Pavers are widely used in landscaping. There is a wide range of pavers to choose from to suit different areas in your home such as a patio, driveway, walkway, pool area atc. Pavers are also used as edging or as stepping stones. Pavers can be made of stone, brick, concrete, grass, and other materials. They come in all sorts of colors, shapes, patterns, and sizes. It is up to you or your landscape designer to choose which kind will fit your landscape theme or style.

Another common hard material for landscaping is crushed rock, which is also available in various sizes and colors. Crushed volcanic rock is a popular choice. Its red color gives a rustic appeal to the landscape. Other kinds of crushed rock include gravel, sandstone, quartz, limestone and others. Crushed rock is versatile, very low-maintenance, and affordable. They are commonly used for paths, driveways and drainage areas.

For constructing decks, steps, edges, walls, pergolas or gazebos, the most widely used material is timber. It is relatively inexpensive, easy to procure and work with. Consider using salvaged or recycled timber instead of new ones. You can re-use this material so make sure not to waste it.

Soils are valuable hard landscaping materials. To improve soil condition in the yard or garden, add organic fertilizing matter or compost. Remember to choose plants that match or thrive on the type of soil that area has.

Because of the broad range of hard landscaping materials, choosing the right product can be overwhelming and confusing. Just remember to select materials that will both go well with the site, the plants, other hard landscaping materials and the overall theme of the garden. For instance, materials made of steel and metal may not go well with an Asian inspired garden. Highly reflective materials are not ideal for areas that get a lot of sunlight. There are also certain pavers that are suitable only for light foot traffic and should not be used on driveways. You should also make sure that the hard landscaping materials you use are durable enough to withstand the type of weather and climate in your area.

Choosing the right hard landscaping materials is very important to a landscape designer. It is just like choosing the floor or fixtures in a house. The landscape designer must ensure that the hard landscaping materials will work together to truly enhance the surroundings.

Garden Path Edging – Doing It Ourselves

How many times have we laid down something perfect in our gardens, only to have it change character over time? I mean, we can choose among a billion subjects, really, Trees grow, flowers and perennials double yearly, even ground covers, unless tended, can overrun the areas we had chosen for them to “accent” rather than to “overwhelm”, lol. The garden is an evolving area and we are smart to act as proactively as possible in an attempt to maintain an iota of control.

Paths are totally susceptible to this dilemma. How many times have we seen them wash out from heavy rains or to become distorted from their original shapes, losing their definition and becoming nearly indistinguishable from the garden itself. There are abundant example of paths which are actually no longer paths but more resemble “remnants” of paths. Some of the problem with this lies in maintenance, of course. Obviously, simply everything in our gardens needs at least some attention. But I can safely aver that paths themselves, if constructed correctly, can last for eons (relatively speaking) without much ado, freeing us up for more worthwhile and less irritating maintenance needs – like serving our plants, shrubs, tress and artsy constructions without interference from yet another source.

In the first place, the very best and most durable paths have edging. This edging will serve more than one purpose but one of the primary ones is to retain the composition of the material making up the path within its designed borders. Now, we achieve this by using good quality stakes to hold the edging in place. This factors into any edging material, by the way. A good stake stays put, simply said, and we need to make sure we couple that solid stake to a durable edging material. Naturally, how we fasten the stake matters. I personally believe in screws.

In my experience, frankly nothing at all beats plastic edging. Flexible, yet strong, it’s durability and its variable sizing makes it perfect for maintaining product integrity as well as for keeping such thing as Rhizomes out from under and travelling into the path – or worse – crossing it and growing somewhere else. I always excavate 3-5 inches out for my pathways and then fill with whatever product I want for the garden. At that time, I make my edges secure while I still have an excavated level to swing a hammer or use a drill to screw my stakes into secure positions, holding up the edges. At that time, I try and secure the curves of the path in a universal way, by using a stick of whatever width I am planning on making the path, laying it between the edges and setting all my stakes at exactly that width. This never fails, naturally enough, in that we secure a perfect dimensional width throughout the entire pathway’s length. Something as mind-numbingly simple as a stick cut the right length can make all the difference in the world between an “eyeballed”, casually designed pathway and that of a true professional and, in the end, there is nothing so gorgeous as a well-designed and perfectly-made path.

The satisfaction, of course, comes with the garden’s own products, but we should never underestimate the sense of perfection and of completion which having a wonderful garden pathway can give. Making them the right way saves time and trouble later.

Saving Money Through Texas Energy Efficiency Investments

As one of the fastest growing states in the US, Texas is challenged with increasing its productivity and it can do this by increasing investments in energy efficiency initiatives that can save both residential and commercial users of Texas electricity literally billions of dollars over the next two decades. Seems like an impossible task? According to the American Council for the Energy-Efficient Economy or ACEEE, such proposition is not only possible but completely doable.

In a recent study conducted by the ACEEE called Energy Efficiency Investments as an Economic Productivity Strategy for Texas, energy efficiency programs in the state could reduce Texas electricity consumption by up to 30% by the year 2030, creating savings for electricity users of up to $14 billion within that period. Not only that, energy efficiency initiatives in the state will also boost employment by creating up to 47,000 jobs each year until the projected period of 2030.

The 30% projected reduction in Texas electricity consumption was based on targets set by the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) for energy efficiency improvements. Also taken into consideration are the estimates made by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) which handles the energy deregulated areas in the state. However, these projected figures will only be achieved with the expansion of current energy efficiency investments which spans all sectors including commercial, industrial and residential area.

Energy Efficiency Initiatives in Texas

According to the ACEEE study, to meet the growing demands for Texas electricity, the state would have to invest about 6 to 10 cents per kilowatt-hour on new electric generating plants. Energy efficiency provides a better alternative however, as the cost of investments to achieve a 30% gain in efficiency will only cost the state less than 4 cents per kilowatt-hour.

For years, energy efficiency programs to reduce electricity consumption in the state have already benefitted Texas residents and businesses as evident in their reduced energy bills. Between 2009 and 2011, the state already benefitted up to $1.5 billion in savings from these energy efficiency programs, which also created up to 12,000 jobs during this same period and reduced emissions by as much as 413 tons per year. By expanding these energy efficiency initiatives, the state will most likely hit its targets by the year 2030.

Texas schools have also benefitted from energy efficiency programs which involved easy investments. A school district with at least 4,000 students can realize savings by as much as $1.6 million in ten years or basically $160,000 savings each year from their Texas electricity bills. Most of the investment funds came from the Texas Loan STAR program for energy efficiency.

City governments have also taken initiatives in reducing energy consumption in their respective areas. In Houston, energy efficiency projects include the use of energy efficient LED traffic lights that would save as much as 85% more Houston electricity than traditional incandescent lamps. Aside from the cost savings, the use of energy efficient lamps also reduces carbon emissions, requires less maintenance and improves overall visibility for each traffic light.

In an energy deregulated Texas electricity market, consumers have the power to select their energy options and apply for grants that would finance their energy efficiency upgrades that would save thousands of dollars from their electricity bills each year. These are basically great investments that would help ensure a clean and sustainable future for all.

Great Advice For Every Kind Of Home Improvement Project

If you’d like to take on a home improvement project but aren’t sure where to begin, you’re in the perfect place. In the following paragraphs, you’ll find pointers that will help you get the most out of your home. Just be sure that you go over the things presented here because this will be the only way change can happen.

When managing your home in the summer months, make use of as many fans as you can. Ceiling fans help circulate air, which will help in cooling the room. This saves you money on air conditioning, too.

Does your lawn have spots where grass refuses to grow? Use some grass seeds to replant parts of your lawn. Without a nice lawn, your house will never look it’s best. Take care of your lawn today.

If you’re embarking on a huge kitchen renovation, set up a makeshift kitchen you can use while yours is unavailable. Your kitchen might not be useable for a couple of weeks so have a microwave and a refrigerator elsewhere in the house so you can store food and make easy meals.

Put your effort and time into making the inside and outside of your home look great. This is all a part of improving your home, and putting in a lot of time and effort will ensure things turn out how you want them to.

You never want to hurry through the demolition when carrying out your home improvement project. While you may be tempted to tear up all the old work as soon as you can so you can begin putting in the new stuff, you should take things slow. However, you don’t want to spend time ripping things out of your walls if you don’t even know whether or not they’re still attached to something.

Use the same shades of glossy and flat paint to achieve a multi-textured finish on your walls that can be really unique. You should use two coats of the flat paint and create some designs with the glossy paint on top of these two coats. The gloss from the paint reflects lights.

It’s a good idea to invest your home improvement budget in projects that will increase the value of your home. Attic conversion is a great investment. When you are selling your home, you can get up to 83 percent back on your improvements.

If you’re a hard worker and are hoping to replace your bed set, you may want to try building bed furniture yourself. There may be some difficulty involved, but through work and patience, it can be done.

Make the most of fans during the summer period. Ceiling fans are great for air circulation as well, and they also cool a room. Saving money on your bills is paramount, as it can add up over time.

When replacing locks, you have two options. You can only replace the cylinder or you can replace the whole assembly. The cylinder being the lock’s mechanism that completes the lock action. Simply purchase a cylinder replacement if you misplace your key. If you want to install an upgrade, then revamp the entire unit.

You should have learned lots of new, great tips for your next project. Whether you’ve picked up an idea for an entirely new project or just learned some nifty ways to save additional time and money, educating yourself on the topic of home improvement is never a waste of time. Use the information above to help guide you on your home improvement projects.

How To Be a Smart Shopper When Selecting Kitchen Cabinets

When renovating or remodeling a kitchen your choice of kitchen
cabinets might be the most important selection you make. Cabinet
selection is important for two reasons.

First, the cabinets you
choose for your new kitchen will be the items having the greatest visual
impact. In the average kitchen cabinets are mounted on or against at
least two walls (or the equivalent), and perhaps more. Cabinets will
also create the base for an island, whether designed for cooking or for
casual dining. The cabinets you select will establish the design of your
kitchen.

Second, the cabinets you select will account for about
half of the total cost of your kitchen renovation or remodel. Although
you can find and purchase cabinetry in a wide range of price categories,
this is an almost universally applicable rule of thumb. Good cabinetry
in not inexpensive. Most contractors and kitchen designers will agree
that kitchen cabinets are not the place to scrimp when designing a new
kitchen. Your cabinets will outlast your kitchen floor, your appliances,
and possibly your countertops (depending upon the material you choose).

Characteristics of good kitchen cabinet construction:

  • Avoid drawers held together with glue, nails or staples
  • Avoid drawers made with thin particle board
  • Test the drawers before you buy to be sure they will support about 75 pounds when open
  • The case or cabinet box should be made of wood that is 1/2 inch thick or more on all sides
  • All surfaces of the cabinet should be finished, even the back and the interior sides
  • Kitchen cabinets should have adjustable shelves (this is a clear indication of construction quality)
  • All shelves in kitchen cabinets should be 5/8 inch thick or more, otherwise they will bow
  • Check the quality of the hinges (most should be invisible from the
front, no squeaks and no metals that will rust easily) and ensure that
    doors open completely
  • The very best kitchen cabinets are made entirely of solid wood
  • A plywood box or case with solid wood frames and doors can still be a good quality product
  • Some reliable kitchen cabinets are available at lower cost because
they are built with plywood supports and use medium- to high-density
particle board for door and drawer fronts. Others use laminate over the
    particleboard.

Cabinet design installs the cabinet
doors in one of two ways. Frameless construction was a very popular
adoption from European design in the 60s. The style continues to be very
popular in contemporary kitchens. In this style, the door covers the
entire box or case of the cabinet. Alternatively, in framed
construction, the doors are installed in a way that leaves a frame
around the outside of the door. Framed construction is the norm in
traditional, country, cottage, and many eclectic kitchen styles.

Ways to purchase kitchen cabinets:

  1. Knock-down
cabinets can be purchased and taken home the same day. Many homeowners
can install these units themselves. These are the least expensive types
of cabinets and can be the perfect choice if you are on a tight budget.
  2. Stock kitchen cabinets are available only in standard sizes and
limited styles and finishes because they are mass-produced by the
manufacturer. These are also a good option when the budget is tight.
  3. Semi-custom cabinets are also available only in standard sizes.
There is a larger selection of styles, finishes, accessories and
options. These provide somewhat more flexibility in designing your
    kitchen.
  4. Custom cabinets, although available from some cabinet companies, are
most often purchased from local cabinet makers. These cabinets are made
to order and are thus built to the exact specifications of your needs.
They are more expensive, but they offer the largest variety in wood,
finish, style, size and special and unique details.
  5. Hybrid approaches are also very popular. By working with a
cabinetmaker to select the kitchen cabinets you like from a
manufacturer. The cabinetmaker then installs the standard size cabinets
and customizes others for special sizes and needs, as well as adding
    personal touches and special features.

Many inserts
and built-in features are also available to provide for organization and
ease of access to items stored within your kitchen cabinets. From
pull-out work surfaces, to drawer fronts for refrigerated drawers, to
door covers for nooks for small appliances to wine racks, you can
customize your cabinetry in a variety of ways to meet your needs. It is
possible to create an appropriately designed cabinet or work surface for
every need.

There are also a number of features available or
customizable to meet the needs of persons with disabilities. These
include lower work surfaces that pull out or that are stationary and
leave open space beneath. Pull-out organizers, Lazy Susans and other
enhancements to make items readily accessible.

This basic
information should help you begin to make decisions about your new
kitchen cabinets. Keep in mind when shopping that the appearance of your
kitchen renovation will be established to a very large extent by the
cabinets you choose. Your cabinetmaker will be able to help you consider
the vast range of ways you can customize your cabinets and create a
unique kitchen design.

Real Estate Seattle Investors Doing Well

Consult a knowledgeable lawyer who is savvy about the legal aspects of your local property market.

The kind of profit one can make on the sale of a property in current use depends on the age and state of the property, its location and its inherent value on the market. As a result CNNMoney.com expects local home values to increase by 3.8 percent by the end of 2011. A residence purchased five or ten years ago will have appreciated in value for the simple reason that property rates are constantly increasing.ng.

With prices low, rates even lower and the huge inventory of homes on the market some investors are capitalizing on the real estate Seattle market. A more rewarding option is the outright sale of the property. That number will exceeds the previous foreclosure rate record set in 2009. Of course, the price a second-sale property will fetch will also depend on whether or not it is well maintained, the facilities it offers, the area it is located in, etc.

The cost that this involves would have to be adjusted in the final amount.

Such individuals seek to make a percentage of profit on properties that they are themselves currently occupying. Till the date of actual completion, rates will tend to be on the rational. Investors need to do their homework and gain sufficient knowledge of current real estate Seattle trends. Plunging headlong into property investment without a proper understanding of what you hope to achieve is not a good idea.

A ‘readymade’ property bought for the purpose of investment will have to be given sufficient time to appreciate in value. Such investors buy property for the exclusive purpose of making a profit from it, and do not utilize the estate personally. * Location is everything. Luckily CNNMoney.com has spotted some life preservers in an otherwise murky sea of real estate opportunity. It is the desire to find work that is fueling the trend of relocating to The Emerald City. However, since certain dynamics of the property market remain constant, a profit is still possible. Property investments are also done in non-developed or partially developed land.

There are chances of a loss if you don’t have an accurate idea of the state of the property market – and the changing values of your investment. Property investors fall into two broad categories, and we’ll discuss both of them briefly:

* It is always more profitable to invest in properties under construction or still in the planning stage. According to the source the following cities stand the best chances of recovery compared to anywhere else in the country. There may also be a need to downgrade on certain expenses such as maintenance costs. If you are interested in hopping on the local real estate Seattle home buying bandwagon, finding the perfect home is just a click away.
If one chooses to invest in residential real estate, the first preference should be towards units that are located on the first floor.

The media has been reporting that by years end more than 1 million properties will be foreclosed. Successful real estate Seattle investments are about a lot more than buying cheap property and selling it at a profit. Pure investors have a better chance of making a profit in their dealings simply because their options are wider. Actual Users

Township properties are your best bet on that score, since they provide all these and more. 2. To begin with, be aware of the odds. If you are utilizing a bank loan in to invest in property, make sure that the ratio of self-finance to the loan amount is supportive of a future profit. There are some bases that need to be covered to reduce the risk factor:

Exclusive Real Estate Investors

Aside from those sad statistics, the average home price is expected to decrease over the next two years across the nation.

Seattle, Washington, Median Home Price $371,000: Real Estate Seattle is not only the northernmost major city in the continental U.S.; the city is also the largest in the entire state. The value of the real estate Seattle property will be even higher if the location is one in current demand. Backed with the right information, you can definitely succeed. This is not to say that real estate Seattle investment is always a chancy proposition. * Real estate Seattle properties available for ready possession – though instantly available – do not allow for much picking and choosing on the above-mentioned points. Since the sale of such a property is usually need-based, the options are reduced drastically.

Nor is it ever a totally risk-free proposition, especially where spurious documentation, faulty judgment, market crashes and other unforeseen circumstances are concerned. Here, the investor has a say in the kind of property he or she wants. They should offer a good view and ventilation and, ideally, the use of a swimming pool, clubhouse and other trendy facilities. Here is a general blueprint for successful investment. They should also be backed by adequate parking facilities. As todays Homes For Sale Seattle list continues to grow with increasing inventory throughout the Real Estate Seattle market, many people have decided to look into purchasing investment properties.

Evaporative Cooler Maintenance Tips – Change Pads Regularly

Through my years of working on evaporative coolers I have found that poor maintenance of cooler pad material probably contributes the most to premature deterioration of the entire cooler. Most owners feel they are saving money by leaving the old pads in the unit for as long as possible but, ultimately they are costing themselves much more money in the long run by having to change out the entire cooler years before they should have to change it. I will explain why this is usually the case. But first lets look at the different types of evaporative cooler media.

Differences in Evaporative Media

The most common pad material for evaporative coolers is aspen pad. These pads get their name because they are made of wood shavings from aspen trees. The aspen wood is then enclosed in plastic cheesecloth mesh sized for each evaporative cooler louver. Aspen pads are very commonly used because the aspen shavings absorb and release moisture very efficiently. By releasing more water into the passing air, the temperature drop using aspen pads is better than some other materials. Although these aspen pads are not as efficient as CELdek media, which is cellulose paper engineered into honeycomb shaped blocks. CELdek media generally comes in 8 in. and 12 in. thick blocks. Since the air passes through thicker material more water is absorbed which gives a greater temperature drop to the air. Since aspen pads are far less expensive to manufacture they are more commonly used in evaporative coolers.

Why Change Pads Regularly

So why should you change aspen pads every year even though they do not look that bad after one year? Your float valve lets many gallons of water into the cooler each day. As the water distributes over all the aspen pads it is constantly evaporating. This is good as it produces cool air. But on the other hand it is leaving all the original minerals from these gallons of water each day to keep building up in the cooler pan. As this heavily mineraled water pumps into the aspen pads, these pads hold much of the minerals. Remember in these types of coolers the aspen pad is in contact with the metal louvers. These minerals being held against the metal louvers can deteriorate the louvers years before they should.

Weigh the Costs

From my experience, most evaporative cooler owners do very little maintenance and complain that the coolers do not last long enough. Others, who do end of the year maintenance, drain and clean the cooler pan and feel they are taking good care of their cooler. But they are leaving a large amount of minerals in the cooler pads through the winter, waiting to deteriorate the metal as soon as the next cooling season starts. Residential cooler pads about cost about $7 each and depending on whether your cooler is a window mount, side draft or down draft roof top unit, you are only using 3 or 4 pads per cooler. Spending $20-$30 per year on aspen cooler pads can usually be far less expensive than buying and installing a new cooler years before you need to. I hope this help to think about changing your cooler pads each year.
